From vine to bottle
In the Moselle region, in the charming village of Ahn, we had a chat with Mathieu Schmit. The young winemaker has recently taken over the Domaine Schmit-Fohl together with his brother. If you don’t have time for a trip to the Moselle, discover their wines on Letzshop.
Please introduce yourself briefly
My name is Mathieu Schmit. For seven generations now, the Schmit-Fohl winery has been located in the heart of the village of Ahn. In 2020, I took over the business together with my brother Nicolas to continue the long family tradition. Our goal is to bring our vision and personality into exactly what the previous generations had built .

What do you value in winemaking?
We treat the soil and the vines with special care. We respect the plants, the earth and the seasons. Most of the work takes place in the vineyard, of course, but in the cellar, too, interventions are kept to a minimum. Thus, our mission is to allow the terroir and the grape varieties to express themselves by favouring limited yields, defoliation and manual harvesting. This approach allows us to produce authentic wines with great ageing potential that express well the typicality of the grape variety and the personality of its terroir.

Your novelties
In 2022, we introduced Luxembourg’s first ‘vin nature’, called ‘Tout-nü’. This wine is pressed without any ingredients and bottled unfiltered and without the addition of sulphites. Another novelty is ‘Le 8’. A rosé wine in a special bottle and presentation. ‘Le 8’ because of our house number, the number 8, and of course because of the special bottle with an octagon at its bottom. This wine is characterised by its fruitiness and its beautiful freshness
