A long family tradition

P1250061-2

The winery Maison Viticole Schmit-Fohl has been established in the heart of the village of Ahn for seven generations. In 2021, the two brothers Nicolas and Mathieu took over the estate to continue the long family tradition, with the aim of bringing their own vision and personality to the 14.5 hectares of vineyards. For 4 years now, the winery has been selling its wine on Letzshop.lu. Mathieu Schmit, the youngest son, spoke to us in the tasting room at Ahn.

Can you tell us about your background and how you came to be a winemaker?

I spent my childhood and teenage years in Ahn, working in my parents’ family business. After secondary school, I decided to study communications in Brussels. Back in Luxembourg, helping my brother and father in the family business made me want to stay on. To perfect my training and specialise in the winegrowing sector, I left to complete my education in Champagne with studies in ‘Wine Business’ at Avize.

Tell us about the wine you have selected for the Letzshop Wäin-Box.

It’s Rosé « Le 8 », millésime 2023. It’s a Rosé made from Pinot Noir grapes, in the style of Provence Rosés. Fruity, fresh and well-structured. The rosé is partly vinified in barrels.

What are the particularities of your terroir and how do they influence your wines?

Our vineyards are located in Wormeldange and Ahn and, despite their proximity, the terroirs have very different characteristics. Our winery has always been known for making dry, mineral wines, which brings out all the power and expression of the terroir.

Which grape varieties do you grow and is there a particular reason for these choices?

We grow all the classic Luxembourg grape varieties, which have been produced by the house for generations, such as Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois etc. In 1985, my father Armand was the first to plant Chardonnay in Luxembourg. Today, we also produce a lot of Pinot Noir, which we vinify as Rosé, classic Pinot Noir and, in very good years, in barrels under the cuvée SF.

We prefer to work the vines by hand. The harvest is done exclusively by hand by a team of grape-pickers who have been with us for several years.

What winemaking techniques do you favour and why?

We try to vinify as ‘naturally’ as possible to respect the grapes and the terroir, so that our wines reflect all the characteristics of the grape variety and the vintage. As the saying goes: ‘From the vine to the glass’.

Are there any family or local traditions that you maintain in your vineyards?

We prefer to work the vines by hand. The harvest is done exclusively by hand by a team of grape-pickers who have been with us for several years (some of them have even worked here since I was born) and who know how to react depending on the state of health of the grapes. My grandparents and parents have always made a point of welcoming customers, and we like to take care of this relationship, as we see it as an integral part of our profession. A final family tradition that’s very important to us is the family lunch… at 12 o’clock precisely, as it should be. And the harvest festival at the end of the harvest, the ‘Hunnefeier’, with all the workers and grape-pickers who have shared four intense weeks of work with us.
