Young winemakers with great potential

P1240281-2

The Domaine Schram is located in the centre of the idyllic Moselle village of Bech-Kleinmacher. The Young winemakers Ben and Max were born with a passion for wine and are now the fourth generation to run the estate. A large selection of wines are produced here, which can be tasted on site and, of course, found on Letzshop.lu. Ben Schram showed us around the winery.

Tell us about your career and how you became a winemaker.

After graduating from high school, I first studied in Innsbruck (Bachelor of Biology) and then went on to study viticulture in Weinsberg (Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology). After that, I was ready to join the family business full-time. I started here in the summer of 2017 so that I am now the cellar master and run the business together with my cousin Max.

Introduce us to your wine that was selected for the Letzshop Wäin Box.

Our Riesling Jongeberg Grand Premier Cru 2023 was fermented spontaneously, which means it was fermented with the grape’s indigenous yeasts. Very nice exotic notes emerge from the bottle, as well as flavours of candied fruit and liquorice. This wine is a great success, very complex and above all long. Although it is still very young, this wine is already very present in the mouth, but it is more of a storage wine with great potential.

What are the special characteristics of your terroir and how do they influence your wines?

The terroir in Haff Remich is clearly reflected in our wines. Our wines are mainly grown on heavy, loamy Keuper soils. This type of soil is known for producing rather fruity and full-bodied wines.

Which grape varieties do you grow and is there a particular reason for this selection?

We mainly grow the traditional grape varieties from the region. However, there are a few exceptions, such as Merlot and Sylvaner.

It is important to us that the winemaking process is as gentle as possible. This also benefits our wines so that they remain aromatic and fresh.

Which winemaking techniques do you favour and why?

It is important to us that the winemaking process is as gentle as possible. This also benefits our wines so that they remain aromatic and fresh.

Are there certain family traditions or local traditions that you cultivate in your vineyard?

During the grape harvest, for example, it is important for us to take time in the evening after work to enjoy a glass of wine with our employees.
