The winegrowers and their wines
Domaine Claude Bentz
Crémant de Luxembourg Brut
Carole Bentz marked a turning point for this Remich-based family winery in 2019. Claude Bentz’s eldest daughter is now in charge of a modern, sumptuous wine house, unique in Luxembourg, with a wine shop and event room designed by architect Jil Bentz, her sister. The wines of Domaine Claude Bentz are fruity, expressive and very long on the palate, like the flagships of Gottesgôf. For some years now, the estate has also been offering the excellent Crémant de Luxembourg Brut. The blend of Riesling and Pinot Blanc with a hint of Auxerrois is a prime example of finesse and harmony and offers an elegant mousse. This noble cuvée is just as suitable as an aperitif crémant as it is with dishes such as puff pastry with fish.
Domaine Krier-Welbes
Pinot Gris Bech-Kleinmacher Naumberg 2022
Guy Krier represents the tenth generation of his winemaking family. He took over the Domaine Krier-Welbes in Ellange-Gare in 1993 and introduced organic farming fifteen years later. After intensive work, his 13-hectare vineyard is now the largest certified organic vineyard in Luxembourg. The meticulous work in the vineyards and in the cellar is reflected in his precise wines and crémants. The winegrower also offers very successful barrique wines. The Pinot Gris Bech-Kleinmacher Naumberg 2022 is a dense, well-structured wine that tastes of ripe orchard fruits and offers the smoky and nougat flavours typical of the terroir. Well-balanced, juicy, gastronomic – ideal with guinea fowl with morels, for example.
Domaine L&R KOX
Auxerrois Privilège Remich Fels 2022
Few wine estates offer as many still wines and crémants as Domaine L&R Kox in Remich. Never at a loss for innovation, Laurent Kox has passed on this spirit of discovery to his daughter Corinne, winemaker and doctor of microbiology, who has launched several projects on the estate, such as the Kvevris vinification and vitiforms. The estate does not neglect the traditional grape varieties and thus offers its Auxerrois Privilège Remich Fels 2022. This is a dry wine that is full-bodied and mineral at the same time, with a nice salty-mineral side that prolongs the pleasure. Very harmonious and gastronomic. Can be served with shellfish, charcuterie and salads.
Domaine Pundel-Hoffeld
Gewürztraminer Machtum Gëllebour 2022
Claude Pundel, who has been assisted by his nephew Mathis Bohnenberger since 2017, also produces the wines of Domaine Pundel-Err in Wormeldange. When vinifying the classic grape varieties, the focus is on fruit and sweetness. Domaine Viticole Pundel-Hoffeld also offers several crémants as well as Muscat Ottonel and unusual white wine cuvées. The Gewürztraminer Machtum Gëllebour 2022 is one of its flagship wines. With 31 grams of residual sugar, the 2022 vintage is beautifully sweet and full-bodied. It contains all the notes you look for in this grape variety: Lychee, rose, a little bergamot and dried apricot. This wine is ideal with fruit and chocolate desserts.
Maison Viticole Schmit-Fohl
Rosé Le 8 2023
Armand and Patrizia have paved the way for their sons Nicolas and Mathieu Schmit to develop intelligent and high-quality viticulture in Ahn. The Maison Viticole Schmit-Fohl, which has been fully organic since 2020, has achieved a number of successes as Nicolas and Mathieu fulfil their tasks with flair. The recently launched Rosé Le 8 is already a bestseller. This cuvée of different grape varieties comes in an attractive bottle that catches the eye. It has a pink-apricot Côtes de Provence colour and tastes like the Luxembourg grape varieties: fruity, lively and strong. And dry, of course! Enjoy it with a plate of ham and melon, for example.
Domaine Schram
Riesling Jongeberg Grand Premier Cru 2023
A picturesque, colourful façade of wild vines covers the building of the winery in Bech-Kleinmacher, where the Schram family has been making its wines since 1951. A new generation is now in charge of the winery: cousins Ben and Max Schram manage the 15.5 hectares of vineyards, all of which are located within a four-kilometre radius of the Domaine Schram. The focus here is on protecting the environment and biodiversity. The Riesling Jongeberg Grand Premier Cru 2023 is one of Domaine Schram’s most accomplished wines. This very dry, rich and dense wine, which benefits from healthy and ripe grapes, coats the palate with its minerality, crisp, pure fruit and a small tannic note that suits it well. The ideal wine for crustaceans and fish.
