A passionate winemaker

image00007_

Being born into a winemaking family does not always mean that you want to work in this profession from an early age. Carole Bentz can testify to this. She only joined the family business Domaine Claude Bentz at the age of 35 and discovered her passion here.

Tell us about your career and how you became a winemaker.

I joined our family business at the age of 35. I am a trained economist and have eleven years of professional experience in the public and private sectors. However, during this time my interest in wine and the various areas that this wonderful profession entails grew ever greater. It was clear to me that this was my vocation. I then attended a few correspondence courses in oenology. The most important thing for me, however, is to have a keen sense of taste and smell and a passion for this profession. Five years later, I am now the fourth generation to run our family business.

Tell us about the wine you have chosen for the Letzshop Wäin-Box.

I chose our Crémant Brut, which has only been on the market since October 2020. The blend of this cuvée is mainly composed of Riesling and Pinot Blanc, supplemented by Auxerrois. This pale yellow Crémant is adorned with a very fine, elegant and persistent perlage and is fine and refined on the nose, delicately fruity with aromas of fresh fruit. The cuvée offers a remarkable complexity that is reflected in the mouth, accompanied by a pleasant mineral impression complemented by flavours of white fruit and notes of bergamot. The finish supports a balanced, persistent freshness. Charm and refinement characterise this Crémant, which is both intense and fine and ends on a beautiful length.

What are the particular characteristics or specialities of your terroir and how do they influence your wines ?

Thanks to the deep soils in our vineyards, which alternate between shell limestone and clay marl, and the mild climate along the Moselle, we are able to produce mineral and long-lasting wines.

Which grape varieties do you grow and is there a particular reason for this selection?

We decide on the appropriate grape varieties based on the nature of the soil and the location of our vineyards. In addition to Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Auxerrois and Chardonnay, we also grow traditional Moselle varieties such as Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Rivaner and Elbling.

Charm and refinement characterise this Crémant, which is both intense and fine and ends on a beautiful length.

Which winemaking techniques do you favour and why?

Characterised by our winemaking philosophy, this begins in winter with the pruning of the vines and extends to the final maturation of the wines in the bottle. Through low yields, healthy grapes and careful handling of the wine in all its phases, we try to produce wines and Crémants of high quality that are characterised by their slow maturation and development potential.
