Innovation in the vineyard

P1250551-2

Passion, respect for the vineyard, creativity and oenological expertise are the four pillars of Domaine L&R Kox in Remich. Following in the footsteps of Laurent and Rita, Corinne – their daughter – has taken over the running of the vineyard and presents us with the estate’s range of wines, also available on Letzshop.lu.

Can you tell us about your background and how you came to be a winemaker?

Although I was born and raised on the estate, taking over the family business wasn’t an obvious choice. Driven by my passion for learning and discovering the world, I went abroad to study molecular biology and worked for several years. I took over the Domaine L&R Kox in 2019 with the aim of reorienting the vineyard towards innovation and sustainability.

Tell us about your wine selected for the Letzshop Wäin-Box.

The wine we have selected for the Letzshop Wäin-Box is a wine made from the Auxerrois grape variety, typical of the Moselle region. This white grape variety, originally from Lorraine, is well suited to the northern regions and the chalky, Keuper soils of our Luxembourg Moselle. Auxerrois Privilège Remich Fels 2022 is a wine with a fruity character (white and yellow orchard fruit) and slightly spicy notes (aniseed). With its pleasant fullness, this wine goes perfectly with white meat or vegetable dishes accompanied by a light white sauce.

What are the particularities of your terroir and how do they influence your wines?

We’re lucky to have the Moselle running alongside all our vineyards. This brings coolness and humidity to our vineyards, while protecting them from frost in winter. What’s more, as all our vines are on slopes in this region, we benefit from excellent exposure to the sun for all our trees. All these factors enable us to obtain better quality grapes, which we find in every one of our bottles.

What grape varieties do you grow and is there a particular reason for these choices?

We currently grow 15 different grape varieties, spread over around fifty plots around the estate. Our aim is to reduce the number of varieties to 10 in order to simplify the process. However, we want to retain a wealth of varieties, which means that the plants are genetically diverse. This genetic diversity gives the vineyards greater resistance to vine diseases.

What winemaking techniques do you favour and why?

At the estate, we use different, varied and sometimes unusual winemaking methods. This diversity allows us to express our desire to innovate and experiment. One atypical technique is the ancestral method of buried terracotta jars called kvevris, which originated in the Caucasus region.

Are there any family or local traditions that you maintain in your vineyards?

The family tradition is based on innovation and experimentation. It’s ingrained in our DNA. It’s impossible to dissociate that from the estate.
