Organic and wholesome

Untitled design(3)

Domaine Krier-Welbes was founded in 1957 by Guy Krier’s parents. He took over the estate in the early 1990s and is proud to continue this tradition. Together with his wife and daughter, he cultivates his vineyards in Ellange according to the rules of organic farming and thus produces highly digestible wines, which can of course also be found on Letzshop.lu.

Tell us about your career and how you became a winemaker.

My parents founded Caves Krier-Welbes in 1957 with vineyards in Bech-Kleinmacher, Wellenstein and Canach.  Until 1969, the wines were vinified in the main winery in Bech-Kleinmacher, and from 1970 the new winery in Mondorf-les-Bains was ready for occupancy. When I took over the business, I only took over the vineyards (4.5 hectares) and expanded the area to almost 14 hectares. Vinification has been carried out in our completely renovated cellar building in Ellange-Gare since 1999. The production of Crémant (since 1992) plays an increasingly important role in our portfolio and all our products are produced according to the rules of organic farming.

Tell us about the wine you have chosen for the Letzshop Wäin-Box.

The Pinot Gris Bech-Kleinmacher Naumberg 2022 was selected for the Letzshop Wäin-Box. Our Burgundy varieties find perfect conditions on the soils of Bech-Kleinmacher for this wine to succeed. The classic flavours of peach and quince dominate here and a gentle acidity gives the wine the necessary freshness. This rather dry Pinot Gris goes wonderfully with light-coloured meat dishes as well as seafood

What are the particular characteristics of your terroir and how do they influence your wines ?

The Naumberg site in Bech-Kleinmacher faces south-south-east and deep Keuper soils with a high proportion of stone (gypsum and anhydrite) characterise the minerality here. The average age of the vineyard is 30 years, which results in wines with a lot of power and body that also have very good ageing potential, as is the case with our Pinot Gris Bech-Kleinmacher, Naumberg 2022.

Which grape varieties do you grow and is there a particular reason for this selection?

Burgundy varieties in general are our speciality, and Pinot Gris is our main variety. Pinot Gris thrives perfectly on these soils and its success is reflected in the high demand from our customers.

We are very proud of our wine bar, which we opened ten years ago. This bar gives us the opportunity to organise wine-related events and our themed evenings and wine presentations are always very popular with our customers.

Which winemaking techniques do you favour and why?

The quality of our wines is created in the vineyard. In the cellar, it’s all about maintaining this quality. Gentle, fast grape processing, precise selection on the sorting belt, gentle pressing in a modern pressing plant and monitored fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks give us this opportunity. We also have space for alternative methods such as ageing in oak barrels, clay amphorae and concrete eggs.

Are there certain family traditions or local traditions that you cultivate in your vineyard?

Wine culture has been cultivated in our family for over 300 years and the Krier-Welbes winery has existed since 1957. Our winery has been certified organic since 2009 with a vineyard area of almost 14 hectares (municipality of Schengen and Stadtbredimus). We are also very proud of our wine bar, which we opened ten years ago. This bar gives us the opportunity to organise wine-related events and our themed evenings and wine presentations are always very popular with our customers.
