Filled or just with almonds?

A very popular tradition in Luxembourg is the ‘Bretzelsonndeg’. On this special day, a man gives his beloved this pastry made from puff pastry as a token of love. This year, ‘Bretzelsonndeg’ is celebrated on the 10th of March. But watch out, because this year is a leap year and this means that the woman has to buy the pretzel.

This folkloric tradition of ‘Bretzelsonndeg’ usually involves the man giving his chosen one a sweet pretzel to reveal his feelings. The beloved then has time until Easter to decide whether she reciprocates these feelings. If she does, she gives her beloved an egg on Easter Sunday. In the past, this was a normal hen’s egg. Today it is more common to give a chocolate egg. However, chocolates are also popular gifts. So if you fancy a sweet pretzel, visit your local bakers, as they are already busy baking.

Not so keen on tradition? Why not simply give flowers on Pretzel Sunday? Or even a funny gift that is reminiscent of the pretzel, such as a pretzel-shaped bracelet? You will surely find a special gift on Letzshop.lu. However, if the feelings are not reciprocated, the woman or man gives back an empty basket, the origin of the expression ‘De Kuerf kréien’ – to get a basket.
